The Boulders Rooftop Potjie Cookout competition was just a benchmark for the upcoming Heritage Battle of the Braai competition on September 24.
As part of the Heritage Day celebration, The Boulders Shopping Centre in conjunction with Rooftop Market invites friends and families from Midrand and surrounds to bring their uniqueness and represent their different cultures in a braai competition.
The competition is open to residents, friends, and families in groups of four. To enter, they must like the market’s Facebook page, tell their stories and cultural adversity through food, and tell which culture they represent. The entry deadline is September 20.
One of the organisers Frans Mahommed said, “Heritage Day [is about] recognising and celebrating the cultural wealth of our nation. We chose a braai theme #HeritageBattleOfTheBraai in celebrating and acknowledging our diversity and we urge all our people local and far to come and enjoy this fun-filled family day with us.”
A braai stand will be provided to contestants and R1 000 for ingredients. The winner will take home R5 000, the runner-up R2 500, and the third-place winner R1 500.
Contestants will receive a set of guidelines and rules that are non-negotiable. They will have to bring the culinary utensils they will need for braaing and plating.
The competition is strictly for a braai, however, vendors can still book stalls and cook traditional food to sell at the venue. Local braai masters will also be offering their different dishes that will be sold to the public.
