A Midrand Mixed A netball team is punching above its weight in its maiden season in the provincial Super League competition.
The team named Imbali (flower), is currently at the summit of the league with 39.5 points after five games, followed by second-placed Edenvale Mixed A with 37.5.
Imbali’s coach Olian Thobejane said he was pleased with how the team continued to exceed themselves in the provincial competition.
He said there was a good camaraderie within the team which contributed immensely to its run of good form. “The players are gelling well, the mood is also good as we are winning our games. We won three and drew two of our games. So far we have not tasted defeat and we want to keep it like that to win the competition,” said Thobejane.
Thobejane is the South African U23 male netball team manager and said the team trained once a week and had games every two weeks.
Goal-shooter and captain Mpho Ntsane said the team wanted to make a name for themselves. “As captain, my role is to lead the team on and off the field. I am a punctual, reliable and disciplined person who hates to lose. Whenever I step onto the court my goal is to win. And that drive comes from all my fellow players who are born winners as well,” said Ntsane.
She said they would like to challenge themselves and represent Gauteng in the inter-provincial tournament.
