Telling Africa’s stories with food

Food is a vital part of the story of South Africa and its people.

South Africans celebrate Heritage Month by remembering the cultural heritage of the diverse cultures that make up the country.

Various events are staged throughout the country to commemorate Heritage Day on September 24.

One local couple Thavha and Tshifhiwa Tshivhase have gone a step further and turned their belief in SA’s food heritage into a celebration of all the cultures and traditions of this country.

“Food is used to celebrate, mourn, and even communicate with a higher power,” say the couple.

Thavha and Tshifhiwa own a food trailer business called Chichi’s Kitchen opposite Halfway House Clinic.

The Venda couple highlighted how people cannot begin a conversation about South African food without giving a special mention to pap. They offer pap dishes at their food trailer as they believe that any time of the day is a great time to enjoy pap — breakfast, lunch, or supper.

Pap can be enjoyed with sugar and milk for breakfast or meat and vegetables for lunch and supper, it can even be used as the base for a tasty drink called Mageu.

There are also many intricate ways to prepare pap, depending on the tribe, for example, Xhosa, Venda, Zulu, or Sepedi.

The couple said that although many African traditions are celebrated on Heritage Day, other occasions are also important in telling the food story of SA.

“These occasions are a group effort where everyone in the community has a role to play in order for the event to be executed.
” For example in the case of a wedding, a white flag is hoisted on the gate of the family home weeks before the date to alert passers-by of the upcoming nuptials.”
