Vegetables are an absolute joy to grow

Harvesting your own veggies is a wonderful hobby and saves at the shops.

Spring is the ideal time to enjoy being in the garden with warmer weather and mild sunshine.

Here is a list of vegetables that can be easily grown from seed, and all need bright sunshine in order to thrive.

Remember when planting seeds, follow the instructions on the seed packet carefully and keep damp for at least 14 days to get good germination. If a very cold snap is expected it is advisesable to cover small seedlings with an opened plastic or rubbish bag overnight.

Ideally, seeds can be sown in little containers for about a month before they are transplanted into the garden. This allows for their environment to be controlled a bit as they can be moved under cover if a thunder storm hits or other extreme weather. The exceptions are beetroot, carrots, onions and radishes which need to be sown directly into the ground.

In containers initially, but can be planted directly into the garden: Beans, carrots, celery, corn, brinjal, lettuce, peas, peppers, pumpkin, spinach and tomatoes.

Plant directly into the ground: beetroot, carrots, onions and radishes.
