Midrand High English teacher follows her mom and grandmother’s footsteps

Midrand High School teacher describes herself as a bookworm who just loves reading novels, magazines and newspapers to improve her English.

Nokuthula Carol Zimo moved from Mpumalanga to further her studies and landed up teaching at Midrand High School.

Zimo holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Bachelor of Arts Honours in English education, and is pursuing a Master of Education in applied languages and literacy education.

This year marks her seventh year as an English teacher at the school.

“My grandmother and my mom were foundation phase teachers and I just loved it. I wanted to teach Grade 1 just like them but as luck would have it, I ended up teaching in a high school. They inspire me to do my best and to be the person that I am today,” she said.
“For me, Women’s Month is about remembering how amazing women are. Certainly, I’ve had many role models who are women who have taught me resilience and how to believe in myself.
“My message to every woman is to believe in yourself because it all begins with you.”
She described herself as a bookworm and said she loved reading. “I’m part of a book club called Between the Covers that meets every month to discuss different types of books. One of my favourite novels is The Yearning by Mohale Mashigo and I am currently reading Gabrielle Union’s Do you have anything stronger? for my next book club meeting.”

She said she loved watching movies and one of her favourite movies was The Dark Knight Rises from the Batman trilogy by Christopher Nolan.

Zimo is also the debate coach at the school and guided the debate team in winning a certificate in a competition recently.
