Best dogs of 2022 crowned

After a two-year break, due to the global pandemic, the show brought out the best in all categories with participants and judges arriving from all provinces in South Africa. International All-Breeds judge Joy McFarlane said the Goldfields Dog of the Year competition is an annual national event where dogs with the greatest number of Best of Breed awards throughout the previous year are invited to compete for the title of Dog of the Year.
“In each of the seven groups (gundogs, herding dogs, hounds, terriers, toy dogs, utility dogs, and working dogs), four breeds are short-listed. These then go into the semi-finals in the main ring,” McFarlane said.
In total, 28 dogs enter the ring and after judging each one by examining them and observing their gait, the judge short-lists 14 finalists. “At this time, it starts to get very nail-biting for the exhibitors. There is a final cut from the 14 dogs to six and then it is time for the judge to choose his or her winners.”
This year’s winners included sixth place– Great Dane; fifth place – bearded collie; fourth place – Siberian husky; third place – Weimaraner and second place – cocker spaniel. The winning breed for 2022 and taking the title of Dog of the Year 2022 was a Scottish terrier.
The title was won by Grand Champion Lucia’s Dream Spot on the Magic For Tartanskye.
