Indlovu FC captain Sello Kgodu shares football pain, hardships and desires

20-year-old defender and Indlovu FC captain Sello Kgodu believes turning professional will change his life for the better.

Indlovu FC captain Sello Kgodu believes hard work, dedication and commitment will take him far in his football journey.

The Ivory Park-born versatile defender, who plays as a left-back, central defender and defensive midfielder, has urged his teammates to work hard for the badge and instil a winning mentality in the team.

Kgodu (20) led his team to be champions of the Midrand Local Football Association (MLFA) league and gain promotion to the SAB Regional league.

He said his first painful lesson in football was during the 2018/19 season playing in the Thembisa Local Football Association league. His team finished second and failed to gain promotion to the regional league. Now, he knows how it feels to be a winner.

“I want to make it to a professional level and play for a big team like Kaizer Chiefs because I think that’s every youngster’s dream because I am a big [Kaizer] Chiefs supporter. Every time I step onto the pitch, I always tell myself that ‘this is your time and play to your best ability. You never know who is watching’,” said Kgodu.

He added he aspired to don the Bafana Bafana jersey one day and only hard work, dedication and discipline could propel him to that level.

“As a wise man once said, hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny. So I believe all my hardships make me want to work hard because losing the opportunity to win the Thembisa Local Football Association league will be my biggest lesson in football.”

He said winning the MLFA came at the right time for him because he believed he had matured as a player and this was a platform where players needed to ‘sell themselves to bigger teams.

The young defender scooped two awards at the team’s end-of-season prize-giving ceremony – defender of the season and players’ player of the season.
