A team of law enforcement conducted an investigation in Midrand on counterfeit snuff, branded as taxi snuff, which led to a fully operational facility in Drieziek Ext 9 in Orange Farm on August 15.

The Intellectual Property Rights Section of the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team in partnership with brand protector experts of Spoor and Fisher Attorneys, Crime Intelligence, Flying Squad, and K9 Unit members of the South African Police Service, executed the search and seizure operation in line with Counterfeit Goods Act.

Midrand investigations lead to counterfeit snuff seizure in Orange Farm.

The Act intends to introduce measures aimed against the trade in counterfeit goods to further protect owners of trademarks, copyrights, and certain marks under the Merchandise Marks Act.

During the search, multiple packets of counterfeit snuff, empty containers, tobacco, and other chemicals found were seized for further investigation.

Media liaison officer of the South African Police Service Lieutenant Philani Nkwalase said the suspect would be served with a J175 summons to appear in court pending the finalisation of the criminal and civil cases against her, for contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act.
