Local DJ to take time off from studio to polish up business knowledge

DJ Kwame SA believes he needed this long-year break to work on becoming a better entertainer.

If you are wondering why Kwame Nkrumah Mahlanga is not releasing any music this year, it’s because he decided to take a year-long break.

Mahlanga, popularly known as DJ Kwame SA in the music industry, said he wanted to focus on polishing his music skills and learn the business side of the industry.

The Midrand-based DJ has always loved collecting music from his friends but did not immediately realise that he has a love for entertainment.

Mahanga said when he first heard DJ Kent and DJ Euphonik playing on radio, he knew that he want to do that as well. “I guess that’s how it all started for me. Given that I started as a DJ, I would say that I am [more of a] DJ but lately I refer to myself as an artist more and more.
“Growing up I was influenced by the likes of the late Fana Khaba (Khabzela) and DJ Monde and currently anyone that is innovative with the music, like Black Coffee, Kabza De Small and Shimza.”

He rose to stardom in late 2008 when he officially started playing in front of people. “The journey has been a rollercoaster, but very fulfilling.”

The Afrotech music producer mixes different musical sounds to create a unique build of quality sounds. He fuses this with smooth vocals packed to fit the Afrotech genre.

He said his fans can expect a better and matured DJ next year when he returns to the studio to work on various projects – including releasing an EP and a single. “This year I have made a decision to take a break on releasing music but work on the craft, [so] that I can learn more about music and perfect the skill. I also want to learn the music business because next year, I would be putting out more music,” said Mahlanga.

He said the music industry was not for the fainthearted because promoting music was expensive.
