Ward 132 residents met with Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport representatives to discuss K73 issues

Residents expressed their concerns about the K73 or Allandale Road upgrade and what the future holds for Willaway residents once the upgrade is done.

Representatives of Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and Ward 132 residents met for a public meeting at Kyalami Preparatory School on August 3 to discuss the issues with the K73 road upgrade.

The meeting was arranged by Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe.

There was a large turnout of residents who expressed their concerns about how the K73 or Allandale Road upgrade affected them and what the future would hold for Willaway residents once the upgrade had been completed.

Among the issues raised were that residents spent about 15 to 45 minutes on the Lyndore Avenue and Maple Drive routes before being able to enter the K73 due to high traffic volumes and accidents on the new road.

Amish Channa, a resident in Willaway said the main concern for residents was that the Maple Drive and Allandale Road intersection would become a left-only turn once the upgrade was completed. Some representatives of the department were not aware of the more than 1 100 people that had signed a petition to allow for a right turn lane at this intersection.

“With a left-only turn, an accident on Allandale will result in residents being totally cut off and may not be able to leave Willaway. Safety and emergency services may also not be able to enter or leave Willaway if the lanes between Maple and the K73 intersection are blocked,” Channa added.
