MLFA deputy secretary Makarina Mokoena has served the association for over a decade

Makarina Mokoena believes she has achieved her dreams and now wants to give back to the young sports administrators who want to follow in her footsteps.

Makara Makarina Mokoena has worked her way through the ranks of the Midrand Local Football Association (MLFA) to be where she is today.

Mokoena (44) began her journey with the association back in 2009 as a volunteer, filling the secretary position.

She said she became involved because of her love for soccer as she was once a player herself.

“It feels good and fulfilling at the same time to be living my dream because when I was growing up, I always wanted to see myself involved in football whether as a player or administrator. Since 2009 [13 years], I started volunteering while the late Ivan May was still here [at the association],” said Mokoena.

She said she was still a soccer player then but managed to juggle the two without any hassles.

Mokoena, who holds a sports management qualification, said in her new role as deputy secretary, she hoped to execute her duties to their fullest.
Asked if the new role was different and came with any challenges Mokoena said, “Not too much pressure as it’s almost the same role I used to occupy in previous years. I just hope to empower more upcoming generations of sports administrators and community development at large.”

She said she would not stand in the 2026 MLFA elections. “I want to empower the young and upcoming generations with experience that was provided by those who gave me the opportunity and groomed me to be the woman I am today.”

Mokoena said more women needed to be involved in sport, particularly football as it was now played by women and men.
