After winning the pre-season trophy, coach fancies MLFA women’s league trophy even more

Super Midrand U19 women's team is ranked first in the MLFA women's league, having won six of their last seven matches.

Unlike other children who dreamed of becoming soccer players, Super Midrand Football Academy coach, Katlego Masia wanted to lead his own team from the sideline.

Due to a large number of youth roaming the streets of Midrand and surrounding areas, Masia saw the need to fulfil his childhood dreams and set up a football team for boys and girls in 2019.

“I grew up as a football follower and Kaizer Motaung has always been my role model,” said Masia.

“My goal was to run a team one day like him [Motaung], the only difference was that Amakhosi did not have a ladies team, so since I believe in gender equality, I decided to also form a team for the girls.”

Masia was also a player at some stage, but realised that most local coaches did not share the same vision as him, so he decided to hang up his boots and become the man behind the team’s tactics.

He formed three divisions under Super Midrand which include boys U15 and U17, and women’s U19 who are also participating in the Midrand Local Football Association (MLFA) women’s league.

Despite his women’s team’s success in the MLFA, bagging 18 points in seven matches, Masia says he needs sponsors for more training equipment to keep players fit.

Currently, Super Midrand U19 women’s team is ranked first in the MLFA women’s league, having won six of their last seven matches. They scored 21 goals so far and conceded only one goal with Tetelo Ramahlo as the team’s top goal scorer with 15 goals.

“We are in need of sponsors at the moment because we are trying to keep the team as motivated as possible. We are also looking for players to join the team to prepare for next season and also the upcoming tournaments.”

The team currently trains at Ivory Park stadium and is looking for transport, training and match kits, soccer balls, and training equipment.

Although Super Midrand won the MLFA women’s preseason tournament, Masia fancies the league title even more.
