Aspiring football sensation leads Gauteng South squad to victory in Limpopo

Moeletsi Mofokeng's coach, Leonard Mofolo said the 13-year-old player deserved to play in the elite league of South African football.

A Grade 7 learner from Curro Sagewood in Noordwyk was one of 45 footballers who represented the province in the Bill Stewart Tournament 2022 in Limpopo from June 30 to July 4.

Moeletsi Mofokeng impressed the scouts and eventually led his Southern Gauteng squad (Southerns) to glory in the national competition.

The dribbling wizard said he is happy that he got on well with the team. His tournament highlight was beating defending champions Easterns, from Eastern Gauteng.

“I think my overall experience in the competition is that I played well but could have done better. I had seven goals in 11 games – and I could have exceeded… I think I could have got about 10 goals,” said Moeletsi.

He said he hopes to play in Europe one day. To achieve his goals, he believes he needs to be focused and look after his diet.

Moeletsi’s dad, Tsietsi Mofokeng described his son as, “An ambitious, disciplined, energetic young man who is very respectful. He has a close relationship with his older sister, Kganya Mofokeng.”

Coach Leonard Mofolo described the Moelesti as a speedy player who has a knack for goals. “His height allows him to be competitive on aerial balls. He is a young player who possesses a high athleticism quality with lots of stamina and great movements on and off the ball. We saw him being more effective on the right wing position [than any other position] as he can deliver good crosses and he is right-footed.”
