Waterfall City club to officially host annual marathon for a good course

Waterfall City running club urge runners to register for their Half Marathon event which will benefit local charities.

Waterfall City Athletics Club will hold its second edition of the club’s annual Half Marathon on August 7.

This will be the club’s first physical (contact) social run following last year’s Covid-19 disruptions.

The marathon will cater for 5km, 10km or long-distance runners of 21.1km.

The club’s chairperson of the organising committee Thabiso Mavuso said the race would allow Comrades Marathon runners to do one last long run before they start their tapering for the ‘ultimate human race’ on August 28.

“Last year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Waterfall City Half Marathon was successfully held as a hybrid event, offering participants an option to run virtually or to run the actual race route throughout August. The event attracted more than 850 participants and was used as a benchmark for hybrid races within Gauteng,” said Mavuso.

He hoped this year’s event would be a milestone for the club as the event would be a physical race involving more than 2 000 participants, supporting the club’s objective to promote a healthy and socially responsible lifestyle.

Rea Kitima (We are running), as the club is fondly known, will use the race to support charity organisations.

“The event will also serve as a fundraiser for charities based in the Waterfall or Midrand community as well as the club’s development team members, most of who come from disadvantaged communities.”

Mavuso said runners have the option to make a cash donation when registering for the race, or bring donations of non-perishables, food and personal care items to the collection point on race day.

Race entry fees (exclude service charges) are as follows: 21.1km (R220), 10km (R150) and 5km (R80).

Details: Thabiso Mavuso 076 538 0832.
