67 minutes at Botshabelo Children’s Home

The centre runs a babies home that cares for orphans and a preschool for underprivileged children.

Botshabelo Children’s Home is one of many care centres in Midrand that received a great number of donations on Mandela Day.

The centre is a multifaceted charity, passionate about transforming children’s lives through excellent residential care and education. It runs a babies home that cares for orphans and a preschool for underprivileged children.

Children who have been abused or abandoned find safety and belonging at the home. Formula and nappies are always in high demand and the Babies Home uses approximately 72 nappies a day.

Several organisations and companies dedicated their 67 minutes of service and donated essential items to the centre on July 18.

The donors included Kiklo FTTx, Pnet, the Academic Institute of Excellence group, and Greenside Design Centre.

Angelique Jansen van Nieuwenhuizen of Kiklo said they chose to support two organisations very dear to their hearts for Mandela Day: Woodrock Animal Shelter which they collect donations for on an ongoing basis, and Botshabelo Children’s Home.

“We had the privilege of visiting Botshabelo, where we delivered cupcakes for the hard-working staff courtesy of Carol Michalakis and Kedu Kids, and a collection of donated items to the Babies Home,” said Van Nieuwenhuizen

“Our team spent our 67 minutes under the guidance of the UpliftED division, covering used formula tins with wrapping paper which are used as containers for the teachers and children, and covering reading books with plastic to protect them.”

UpliftED is a Teacher Training Programme that partners with low-income communities to empower both teachers and principals of ‘backyard’ crèches. UpliftED reaches over 4 000 preschoolers every year, giving them a greater chance at success in formal schooling. They believe that changing a nation means first empowering women and children with education.

Botshabelo thanked all the donors for their generous contributions and their 67 minutes spent at the children’s home.
