Reddford House learners scoop top global robotics competition

Reddford House Blue Hills dominates global Stem space after winning the global competition in Italy.

The future looks bright for Reddford House Blue Hills learners in Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Stem) following their Inspired Builds 2022 win in Italy.

Three Grade 7 learners, Bontle Ngoasheng, Shalom Halata and Alishia J Naidoo (all 12 years old) made strides as podium finishers in the 11–12 years category of the global robotics competition and inter-school technology challenge.

The trio, who are friends and classmates, had to make a robot that was superior in intelligent design, innovation, programming quality and general appeal.

Head of school Zain Strydom said the standard of entries this year was high, but he was pleased that the learners showed their knowledge and skills. “Our learners’ winning entry demonstrated their ability to code and intelligently design the robot to move in different directions. They [learners] showed their creativity and ingenuity through the use of machine technology,” said Strydom.

This year’s competition dubbed ‘enabling movement’ was led by St. Louis School of Milan, Italy and invited learners to make machines that enable movement using innovative coding and creative design. Coding and robotic teacher David van Leeuwen said, “The competition’s approach empowers learners to build successful careers in the fast-growing and crucially important Stem sector, and thrive in an information-driven and digital world.”

Van Leeuwen said the learners did not have any challenges as they worked well together and worked hard to impress in the technology challenge.

The three friends shared the same sentiments of pursuing professional careers in Stem when they grow up. They also urged their peers to take part by making Stem more fun while learning.

Last year, two Grade 7 learners placed in the top 5 winning positions, when it was held in Fulham House School in London, United Kingdom.
