Road finally repaired

After many months of waiting and frustration, the road next to a local resident's home has finally been repaired.

A trench that was left unattended for almost two years at the Summerset Estate in Noordwyk has finally been fixed by Joburg Water.

Resident Bridget Theunissen explained that Joburg Water had dug a big hole outside her home in December 2020 when they were fixing a leaking water pipe.

She then contacted the estate’s manager, Rhona Rakow, regarding the issue. Rakow, in turn, contacted Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA), and later Joburg Water, but to no avail. No repairs were made as it became unclear which entity was responsible to fix the trench.

Theunissen, who has lived in Summerset Estate since 2005, told the Midrand Reporter on July 4, “I just want whoever is responsible to fix this mess. Last year [2021], I spent my festive season with this bad trench which would generate a bad smell and [attract] mosquitos around it. I pay my rates monthly but the service delivery is very poor to say the least.”

The Midrand Reporter contacted JRA and Joburg Water on July 4 and then established that Joburg Water was responsible for the repair of the road.

MMC Funzela Ngobeni’s spokesperson Olebogeng Molathlwa said on behalf of JRA said, “The trench in question was dug by Joburg Water in order to repair a leaking pipe. As such, Joburg Water will have to send a team to restore the surface to its original condition.”

Joburg Water spokesperson Seipati Nyawaza explained why the repairs took so long, “Johannesburg Water was recently notified of the outstanding reinstatement by JRA, as the [Summerset] Estate was directing its enquiries to JRA. We have assigned a team and the reinstatement will be concluded on July 14.”

Theunissen confirmed that the road had indeed been fixed by July 14.
