Seven months later, wire and pole still not removed by City Power

It's now been six months since the December 2021 car accident which left a street light damaged but City Power has not removed the pole and its cables which are allegedly live.

Following a car accident last year which left a street light pole on the ground and exposed wires on Alsatian Road in Glen Austin AH, more than six months later, City Power had not removed the damaged infrastructure.

When responding to Midrand Reporter’s query on April 29 this year, City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said, “As City Power we confirm that we are aware of the exposed wires. Upon investigation, it became apparent that the wires are not live. City Power commits that all the wires will be removed as a matter of urgency.”

Since then, the street light pole had not been removed.

Cynthia Lawrence of Eduvo Campus which is nearby the site said, “We are grateful that the Johannesburg Roads Agency listened to our plight and came to fix Alsatian Road potholes. However, the street light and the cables are yet to be removed. This puts a massive risk to our staff, students and community at large. The accident happened in December 2021 and it’s [street light] been there almost half a year now.”
On July 7, Mangena said, “As this was a Capex project [removal of the street light] where a budget was allocated there has to be due process. There are proposals to fix the lights and the motivation letter is pending approval from relevant officials. Communication to this effect will be carried out by the stakeholder officer in the area when the project is ready to be commissioned.

“Unfortunately, we cannot give timeframes at this point until all processes have been concluded.”
