Sector 3 urges motorists to be vigilant amid ‘new’ modus operandi

Midrand police warned residents to be careful around the Allandale Road on and off-ramp, New Road, Le Roux Avenue and the N1 and R55.

Hijackings in Noordwyk suburb have been committed using a ‘new’ modus operandi.

This according to Sector 3 Crime Forum’s Marvin Maphiri who urged residents to be vigilant amid the increasing incidents.

He said hijackers would intentionally bump into motorists using their own vehicles, and when the victims get out to check on the damage, they hijack them.

Maphiri said this when addressing residents at a public meeting held at Midrand Primary School on June 25.

“When it comes to hijacking, there is a modus operandi that the criminals are using to rob motorists of their cars and sometimes their belongings such as cellphones and jewellery. This is because there are a lot of bogus cops around the area which have blue lights on their vehicles,” said Maphiri.

He said their were three suspects who drove either a white or silver Volkswagen Polo Vivo or an Audi A3.

Another hijacking method noted by the sector was the alleged bogus cops who have blue lights installed in their vehicles and pretended to be authorities.

Maphiri told motorists what to do if they are stopped by the alleged bogus cops, “Motorist needs to be extra careful of who stops them and if they don’t feel safe, it’s best not to [stop] but instead drive to the nearest police station because nowadays, driving to the shopping complex where there are a lot of people, they still commit the crime.”

Last month, the Midrand police warned motorists that Allandale Road on and off-ramp was one of the spots the bogus cops operated in. Midrand police spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane said other roads included the N1 highway, New Road, Le Roux Avenue and the R55.
