Midrand SPCA maintains momentum for its coal yard project

A total of 16 horses were shod and dewormed, and 14 equipped with boots.

As promised, the Midrand SPCA team headed out again with a wonderful team of farriers and volunteers to tend to the 25 coal-yard horses in Tembisa.

The SPCA continued its cold yards project, as the organisation’s team braved the cold and miserable weather on June 24 to return to the coal yards and continue to shoe the horses and ponies.

A further 16 horses were shod, dewormed, and 14 were fitted with boots, while others also required that their overgrown hooves be trimmed down.

The SPCA thanked Anthony Ward and his team of farriers, Kate Laird for blankets and goodies, Kim Rabjohn for donating the boots, Daryl Gershow for donating horseshoes, Mandy Jarmen for more shoes, Deon Boardman and his team, Dr Edward Evans, Thomas Alegandra, and Warren Hunter.

“You are all amazing people with big hearts. The impact of your hard work and dedication to this project is such a rewarding experience for us all,” said the SPCA in a statement.

“Any person with equine knowledge would know that this is no easy task and we have great admiration for all the farriers and volunteers that have assisted us in making this project a huge success.”

Despite some of the work having been completed, the SPCA said the project to provide all horses with proper harnesses is still ongoing.

A number of modifications are being made to ensure that the horses have the most comfortable, well-fitted harnesses that will not cause harm as they continue to work.

The SPCA inspectors also noted that there were approximately 20 to 30 unsterilised dogs at the coal yards and they would love to be able to sterilise them to prevent unwanted puppies.
