South Africa records first monkeypox case

Monkeypox is a viral disease that causes blisters in the skin, with symptoms like fever and flue

Health Minister Joe Phaahla has announced that the first case of monkeypox has been identified in South Africa. The announcement was made at a news conference on June 23.

” The next matter I’ll like to touch on is the monkeypox, which is spreading in various parts of the world. Late yesterday, I received a report from the National Health Laboratory Service indicating that they have confirmed through laboratory tests the first case of monkeypox in South Africa,” Phaahla said.

According to Phaahla, the patient is a 30-year-old man from Johannesburg with no recent travelling history.

“It can not be attributed to the disease having been acquired elsewhere, it just means that it is with us.”
