Midrand philanthropist adds another accolade to her collection

She taught at the Tshwaranang ABET Centre in Rabie Ridge for seven years and started Sewelaleago daycare in Ebony Park in 1997.

As part of Mother’s Day celebrations, Basadi Ba Moshito Foundation awarded President Park-based philanthropist Eli Shadung (53) with the Mma Sechaba Award for 2022.

Every year on Mother’s Day, this award which is referred to as the ‘mother of the nation’ award, is given to a woman who does extraordinary work in the community.
Shandung was nominated by Mosima Letswalo, an ex-student of Chrismorg Consulting Firm, one of the many non-profit organisations Shandung runs in her neighbourhood.

The foundation, also known as BBM foundation, is a non-profit organisation that serves as an information and resource centre for connecting women to the appropriate support structures in response to the challenges they face.

“I feel like Mother Teresa with this accolade, as I am considered a second mother to the community who sees me as their mother, mentor, role model and community developer,” said Shadung.

When she is not preaching the word of God as a pastor on Sundays, she runs another organisation, Itirelebutji Community Development, that deals with health-related issues in the community and provides food to the less fortunate.

The mother of six and grandmother of two has taught at Tshwaranang Abet Centre in Rabie Ridge for seven years and later founded Sewelaleago daycare in Ebony Park in 1997.

“I am a generous, caring, and community-oriented individual who enjoys giving to others. My heart is more focused on education as a guidance teacher and having the opportunity to serve my community has been a blessing to me.”

Her other accolades include a certificate of recognition from Strong and Courageous Forum, a certificate of appreciation from Ebony Park Primary School, and Tumelo Home awarded her for her efforts.

“Thank you to the community for allowing me to be a part of your lives and for trusting me with the work I do, which includes counselling, prayers, job opportunities, education, home-based care and assignments.”
