Trio arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm in Glen Austin

Three men are expected to appear in court after being found in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Glen Austin, Midrand.

Local police arrested three suspects for possession of an unlicensed firearm at a robbery and hijacking hotspot in Glen Austin AH.

The trio was arrested by a social crime prevention coordinator, a tracing team member and a communication official from Midrand Police Station at about 13:30 on June 1 on Alsatian Road.

Station spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane said police were monitoring trio crimes in Sector 1 and conducting awareness campaigns after many cases were reported.

“A white Golf was spotted stationary with three suspects and they were immediately searched and a firearm was found in their possession. All suspects have been detained and are due to appear in court,” said Mabulane.

Acting Station Commander Colonel Hosea Mantji said there have been several cases of armed robberies and hijackings reported involving about two to three males and a firearm. “The scene where suspects [were] arrested is a hotspot for hijackings and robberies,” said Mantji.

He commended the members for their success and for putting their lives in danger to protect the community which shows patriotism and the love to serve.
