Midrand Spoilers FC chairperson, Samuel Maboa, hopes to bring home silverware from the Lerato Lamola Winter Games after ending the Johannesburg men’s regional league in position four.

Spoilers have booked their place in the seventh edition of the Winter Games, which will take place from May 28 until June 18 at Lord Khanyile Hall sports ground in Ivory Park.

“Our goal is to get something out of the tournament,” said Maboa. “We need a strong squad for this tournament since many teams come prepared for it. Therefore, the team is seeking two goalkeepers, five U21s players, a head coach, and an administrator.”

The Winter Games were founded by professional football player Lerato Trevor Lamola in 2015. A total of 32 teams including Spoilers, will compete for the grand prize of R70 000 and a full soccer kit. Runners-up will receive R20 000, while third and fourth place will receive R6000.

Lamola seeks to showcase the talent of young players through the tournament. The registration fee is R3 500 plus two pairs of school shoes from each of the 32 teams.

Once the tournament concludes, the shoes will be distributed to various schools in Ivory Park, Midrand, Tembisa, and the surrounding areas.

Despite his desire to win, Maboa explained the tournament is also preparation for the next season. “Getting silverware will be a big injection for us because the team has no sponsors and we also need a venue for training to prepare.”
