Local NPO raise funds on World Book Day for animal treatment

Ruth Butcher, CEO of the Society for Animals in Distress said no treatment is ever refused if a client is unable to donate towards their pet’s professional treatment.

The Society for Animals in Distress (Said) held a fundraising event with the aim of sustaining the operational costs of the organisation.

This was held at their 4.2ha farm in Vorna Vally, Midrand, on April 23 which was also World Book Day.

Ruth Butcher, CEO of the organisation said their aim was to provide professional veterinary care that was built on a foundation of focused animal care education in marginalised and disadvantaged local communities.

“Our professional veterinary care is supported by experienced surgical and medical veterinarians and para-veterinarians who achieve excellence in their respective disciplines. We encourage local residents to come through and visit us. We are happy to take them on a tour,” said Butcher.

The organisation sold a variety of books on the day as a celebration of World Book Day. Other fundraising activities involved the selling of ‘home grown’ organic compost to the public on a first-come-first-serve basis.

“We collect and resell pre-loved goods and second-hand books to raise much-needed funds for our animals. Said hosts an annual golf day and also [participates] in other sporting events where our loyal supporters can run or cycle for a cause close to their hearts.”

She said at their animal hospital they generated funding by charging all NGOs a nominal fee for professional veterinary services. However, no treatment was ever refused if a client was unable to donate towards their pet’s treatment.

Said is a NPO that relies on donor funding 100% and was formed in 1958 by the late Didi Rutherford who had a passion for animals’ well-being.
