Grade 10 Curro learner shines at engineering camp

WATERFALL CITY – Sonali Arjun (15) said she is ecstatic that she accomplished such a feat to pave a bright future for herself.

The future in science, technology, engineering and mathematics looks bright for a Grade 10 learner from Curro Waterfall in Midrand.

Sonali Arjun scooped first place for best innovation at the GirlEng (Girl Engineering) Technovation camp held in Johannesburg from March 29 to April 1.

The four-day camp was aimed at Grade 9–11 girls interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem). It involved active learning workshops aimed to help girls to start thinking and acting like engineers.

Sonali (15) said she is extremely proud and ecstatic that she accomplished such a feat to pave a bright future for herself. “It [camp] made me feel proud of my group because of how well we were able to work together and achieve as a team,” she said.

“Personally, I learnt how one should have to think in order to make themselves successful in an engineering-focused world. It also helped me know and learn what kind of attributes and skills I need to achieve my goals within the field.”

She added that she did not come across any challenges during the course – everything and everyone was easy to work with since she was surrounded by people who think like her.

Sonali shared what subject she would like to study after high school, “I would want to do mechatronics because looking at the inner workings of the world, it is moving in that direction and I want to be in the centre of it all so I am able to help with new technologies.”
