Karate academy opened for all, rookies to get free lessons in April

Sensei Sergio Ferreira said in a bid to encourage people to try karate, lessons will be free for the month of April for any new student.

Midrand Karate Academy has opened its doors to anyone willing to learn this well-known form of self-defence.

Sensei Sergio Ferreira said he trained children and adults on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 16:30 with the senior class commencing at 18:30.

He said karate had its roots in Okinawa, Japan where it was used as self-defence and was later introduced throughout Japan where it was even taught in universities and the military.

“I use the same self-defence principles that were taught all those years ago in Okinawa. Karate has no limit on age as the masters in Japan still practise at the age of 90. So, it’s never too late to start,” said Ferreira.

Last year, the academy awarded five black belts to their talented students.

The academy was founded by sensei Alfredo Ruocchio about 10 years ago. “Unfortunately, sensei Alfredo Ruocchio and his family immigrated to Ireland which is when I took over. Even though we concentrate more on the traditional form of karate, I still have some students who participate in tournaments and make me proud at every event.”

On other days, Ferreira teaches karate at Christ Church Preparatory School and College in Noordwyk.

He said in a bid to encourage people to take up karate, lessons will be free for the month of April for any new student and so if they wanted to try, then this was their opportunity to get started.

The academy had their open day on March 12, and young students showed off their skills followed by the seniors.
