Sector 3 crime numbers drop, community urged to remain vigilant at all times

NOORDWYK — Midrand Sector 3 Crime Forum chairperson Marvin Maphiri said car hijackings and property-related crimes have plunged by 27%.

Crime activities in Noordwyk and surrounding suburbs have plummeted drastically, according to the latest Midrand Sector 3 Crime Forum statistics.

Sector 3 chairperson Marvin Maphiri said although the numbers have dropped, the installation of CCTV cameras at hotspots is still a necessity not a luxury if they are to win the crime battle.

Speaking after the community meeting held on March 26 at Noordwyk Secondary School, Maphiri said it was important that community members sign a petition aimed at getting street poles and not rest on their laurels.

“Cable theft, especially copper, is on the rise and members of the community are urged to report any cable activity to the SAPS, even if it looks legit. However, contact crimes have decreased by 15.5% while trio crimes have also dropped by 42%,” said Maphiri.

He added that car hijackings and property-related crimes have plunged by 27%.

However, Maphiri also added that Noordwyk was leading when it came to general crime activities with 152 crime incidents being reported, followed by Blue Hills (57), Crowthorne (9) and Country View (2).

“[It is] mostly, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays when most motorists are either being hijacked or their vehicles stolen. House robberies occur frequently on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 08:00 and 16:00.”

Maphiri said the most affected and active time regarding crime activities is Tuesdays between 20:00 and 00:00.

He concluded that although the numbers have dropped, community members need to be vigilant at all times.\
