Local school joins the rest of the world to celebrate National Blue Day

NOORDWYK — The idea of the National Blue Day originated from Anita Mitchell, a stage four colon cancer survivor who had lost a close friend to the disease.

Christ Church Preparatory School and College foundation phase learners joined the rest of the world in celebrating National Blue Day on March 4.

As cited on the Days Of The Year website, the idea for National Blue Day or National Dress in Blue Day originated from Anita Mitchell, a stage four colon cancer survivor who had lost a close friend and her father to the disease.

Upon learning that both of these tragedies could have been prevented, Mitchell saw a need to raise awareness about cancer, which not many people wanted to talk about.

During the week leading up to National Blue Day, the Christ Church foundation phase learners held a blue-themed week. “National Blue Day has been put aside to raise awareness for colon cancer throughout the world,” said Dawn Schmitz the school’s marketing manager.

On the day, learners wrote their favourite teachers a message on a blue piece of paper, which was placed onto an Easter egg at the school.

“Other activities included blue bingo, making blue flowers, blue-only artwork, blue sock day, and wearing blue elastics to remind us to pray for wisdom for the doctors and all those affected with colon cancer,” Schmitz added.
