Alternative techniques to overcome depression

JOBURG — "There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn't," John Green states.

Depression is much more than a sensation of sadness, a desire to stay in bed or tears.
It is a common and serious medical illness which is characterised by a continuous sense of melancholy and a loss of interest.

Even though one can be depressed and still smile, converse with co-workers, and operate reasonably well. Feelings of hopelessness, on the other hand, might creep up on them and grow stronger with each passing day, until it’s the only feeling they are left with.

Dr Eugene Allers, a prominent psychiatrist said if one was suffering from depression, they must act and seek assistance, just as they would if they have a damaged ankle.

Here are six to help one cope with depression:

Contact loved ones who make you feel protected and have a conversation with them. Sometimes you just need someone to listen to you without passing judgment on your situation.

Although exercise may be the last thing on your mind, it can help you feel better. A jog, a walk around the block, or a climb can help you feel less depressed and more energised.

Break down tasks so you don’t get overwhelmed. Instead of cleaning the house, take out the trash. As the proverb goes: ‘There is only one way to eat an elephant, one bite at a time.’ After that, look at how you’re feeling before moving on to the next activity.

Add mood-boosting foods to your diets, such as veggies, lean meats, and Omega-3 fatty acids, to enhance your energy and improve your general health.

Recognise and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how minor they may be. When you remember how far you’ve come, it’ll be simpler to set unpleasant thoughts and feelings aside.

#BreakingDepression is possible with the correct treatment and support. Seek expert assistance, allow yourself time to heal, and soon you too will reflect on your life events and how they shaped you into the person you are today.
