DA Ward 132 pickets for peace in Waterfall City against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

WATERFALL CITY — Councillor Annette Deppe said they were concerned with what could be a potential World War III and the possibility of sky-rocketing fuel and food prices, respectively, if nothing is being done.

The DA in Ward 132 held a peaceful march outside Waterfall City in Midrand, against the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

The peaceful gathering was held on Human Rights Day (March 21) on Allandale Road and Lone Creek Crescent.

Despite light rains, about 50 people attended the event, including Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe, Member of Parliament Madeleine Hicklin and Michael Sun MMC of Environment and Infrastructure Services.

Deppe said they were concerned with what could be a potential World War III if nothing is being done and the possibility of sky-rocketing fuel and food prices, respectively.

“Because it’s Human Rights Day today, we just want to show our support to Ukraine. As ward councillors, we do not want to go into another war situation.

“It has been less than a month since Vladimir Putin’s Russia invaded Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Ukraine, resulting in about 19 000 deaths while millions have been misplaced”.

Hicklin, who addressed the gathering after the march, said they were wary of the economic impact the attack could have on the rest of the world as Ukraine is one of the major role players economically.

“Many people have asked me, why I am so concerned about the war in Ukraine. And my answer is really multi-faceted. But the fact is this is the closest we have come to being on the brink of a major world war in almost 80 years.”

One demonstrator Vicky Mafanele concluded, “We want to show our support to Ukraine. And hope that Putin can see that what he is doing is wrong and will affect the world in one way or the other.”
