Armed robber convicted, receives 14-year sentence

MIDRAND – The armed robber, who was arrested by two police officials in President Park in 2021, was slammed with a lengthy sentence on March 24.

The Midrand Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced an armed robber to 14 years’ imprisonment.

Zinja Malakhiwe, who was arrested by two police officials in President Park in 2021, was slammed with a lengthy sentence on March 24 at the magistrate’s court.

Midrand Police Station spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane said Malakhiwe was arrested for robbery in October last year.

“The convicted man robbed one victim of his personal belongings such as cell phone. After the robbery had occurred, the victim ran towards Boshoff Road where he came across two police officers and informed them about what happened to him,” said Mabulane.

Sergeant Doctor Mapara and Sergeant Thabiso Selowa assisted the victim, and searched for Malakhiwe who was later arrested. The victim’s belongings were also recovered.

The Midrand Police Station Commander Brigadier Molefi Tsotsotso praised the two police officers for the arrest and ultimately the conviction.

“This conviction will send a strong message to those who are committing crimes and to let them know that they can run but they cannot hide from the law to its course. The conviction will also serve as deterrence to all the other criminals out there,” said Tsotsotso.

He said, as head of Midrand Police Station, that they will continue working towards uprooting any level of criminality in the area.

Tsotsotso concluded that they will not tolerate actions of criminality committed by criminals within the area to go unpunished.
