Local school achieves big at Thea Gafin Arts and Culture Festival 2022

NOORDWYK – The festival programme includes performing arts such as theatre, dance, stand-up comedy, and music amongst others.

Thea Gafin Arts and Culture Festival 2022 was the perfect setting for Christ Church Preparatory School and College learners to show off their school pride.

Learners Makungu Chabalala, Jennifer Baillie and Aliyah Bennett entered the festival, held in association with the National Children’s Theatre.

The festival programme included performing arts, such as theatre, dance, stand-up comedy, and music amongst others.

Besides putting on frequent performances, the theatre also does interactive musical plays, theatre workshops for children aged between seven and 17, life skills programmes, and theatre-in-education work with young people.

The three learners from the Noordwyk-based school performed at the Joburg Theatre in the Lesedi venue recently. They achieved an A-plus symbol for their exceptional musical performance which displayed completely different acting styles and singing styles.

Dawn Schmitz, the school marketing manager, said, “The adjudicator enjoyed the learner’s range and was amazed at how they succeeded in demonstrating a wide range of skills.”

Moreover, the school teachers Jeremy Frost and Mitchell Clark assisted with the technical work and were commended for sharing their passion for theatre to help ensure that all performances were a success. “Sofia Kajee, a Grade 2 learner also entered a solo ballet and performed with confidence and great energy. Thank you to all who were involved in making the evening a success, and for investing their talents and skills in the love of theatre,” Schmitz concluded.
