Gospel music is my ‘true calling’

NOORDWYK – Chairo served as backing vocalist to well-established gospel singers such as Dr Tumi, Takesure Zamar Ncube, Rofhiwa Manyanga and Lufuno Dagada among others.

Gospel musician Takalani Chairo (33) vows to stick to this genre of music and will not crossover into others just to make it in the industry.

The former backing vocalist from Noordwyk said she was ecstatic with how her debut album had been received despite most songs being in the Tshivenda language.

“This proved to me that music is universal language irrespective of the language one is using. It is more about how well one connects to the music. With gospel music it’s where I can fully express myself, and find my true purpose. Gospel music is my calling,” said Chairo.

She released her debut single Push, Pray Until Something Happens in 2018.

She now plans a launch in June for her new single Ahuna which garnered more than 10 000 views on YouTube in less than a week of its release in October last year.

Chairo served as backing vocalist to well-established gospel singers Dr Tumi, Takesure Zamar Ncube, Rofhiwa Manyanga and Lufuno Dagada among others.

She juggles her music with her non-profit organisation, Women on The Move International where she gives life lessons to young girls and women.

Asked what her words of encouragement would be to the young women who want to explore the music industry, Chairo said they should never limit themselves.

“You look at Makhadzi’s breakthrough, and you see that there are still a lot of opportunities for young women in the music and entertainment industry. For them it is to keep pushing and never give up. They should not set limits for themselves but most importantly, they should be prepared for the challenges in their journey.”

She concluded that although the music industry was a male-dominated space, she was happy with the number of women who have made their mark and persisted until they emerged victorious.
