Authorities’ operations leads to 22 illegal taxis impounded

ALLANDALE – Police operation leads to 258 arrests, impounding 22 illegal taxis and slamming drivers with 81 traffic fines amounting to an estimated value of R112 400.

A two-day police operation resulted in the confiscation of 22 illegally operating taxis off the roads and the arrest of 258 suspects for various other crimes.

This after the police conducted roadblocks on Allandale Road just before Dane Road in Midrand on March 24.

According to the Ekurhuleni District communication officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the Okae Molao operation was conducted in conjunction with various law enforcement agencies and was attended by the district’s police commissioner Major General Anna Sithole.

Sithole said she was pleased with the success of the operation and believed having more of them would help fight crime.

“About 258 suspects were arrested and taken for questioning on various criminal charges. And of those, 81 traffic fines were issued to motorists with an estimated value of R112 400 for contravening the Road Traffic Act,” said Sithole.

The operation included stop and search of drivers, passengers and their vehicles, and vehicle identification number verification.

One person was arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle related to an active case from last year, and another for pretending to be a police official.

“We arrested 22 people for gender-based violence. This is one other social ill that, as the police, we need to work hard in making sure that we combat within our communities. We will leave no stone unturned when it comes to gender-based violence and all crimes”.

Sithole concluded the issue of illegal liquor traders was a concern and the police had closed down five illegal shebeens and had confiscated 621 130 millilitres [not litres] of liquor in Rabie Ridge alone.
