Rangers beat Makang to maintain winning streak

MIDRAND AND ALEXANDRA — Makang got frustrated in their attempts to get back into the match as Nyiko Mhlongo and Lesego Meletse got denied clear goal chances by Rangers keeper.

Karabo Moiwa’s header earned Rangers FC from Alexandra a third consecutive win in the Johannesburg men’s regional league after beating Midrand-based Makang Supers FC 2–1 on March 5.

Rabie Ridge Stadium played host to the match and Rangers were the first to break the deadlock when Njabulo ‘Jomo’ Nkosi scored a goal 10 minutes into the match after he dribbled past a Makang defender and fired a left-footed shot into the top corner.

Rangers controlled much of the ball possession in the first quarter of the match, and Itumeleng Molepo almost doubled the lead for the visitors, but Makang’s shot-stopper, Mpho Mabotja saved Molepo’s shot with his fingertip.

Despite their best efforts to get back into the match, Makang had to deal with the brilliant saves of Rangers keeper Vusi Mashele who denied Nyiko Mhlongo and Lesego Meletse clear goal opportunities.

Makang leveled the score with a grass-cutter rocket strike from Tebogo Thepa five minutes into the second half, and almost took the lead for the first time but Ntokozo Mohane’s bicycle kick got denied by the goalpost.

Rangers secured the victory from a corner kick after Mabotja fumbled the ball and it fell to Moiwa who calmly headed in. Mabulo Mathobela had a strike kept out by Mashele as Makang pressed for a last-minute consolation.
