Masterdee does it himself

NOORDWYK – Molefe Phiri, aka Masterdee Molefe, advised that there was no need to wait for huge record label deals, one could just simply do it himself.

Molefe Phiri, known to many as Masterdee Molefe, shared his story of becoming a successful and independent artist.

The Noordwyk-based deep-house DJ, producer, and record label said that he lived his entire life at Olievenhoutbosch until recently when he moved to Midrand.

Phiri said he started getting into music after developing a love for the deep-house sound, back in his late primary school days.

“I pushed places of entertainment, such as pubs and all the guys who had sound equipment to give me an opportunity so I could teach myself how to deejay and learn the basic skills.

“Once they gave me a chance to touch their equipment, I taught myself the basics and then kept on running by myself until I could become a fully fletched DJ and music producer.”

Molefe said that his two record labels, Bassment Music RSA and Upstream Music SA also came into existence when he became familiar with the industry.

It was difficult for him to get resources to host events and create a platform for himself and others so he had to do something for himself.

Since he was an information technology graduate, he got a job and worked for three years, saving money to follow his dream.

He then decided to invest in creating Bassment Music RSA to enable himself to host events at venues, release music and have a studio.

“People saw me as a rookie. However, now with my platforms available, even if we do not host events, I have created avenues to present myself and other DJs and producers.

“And after seeing the potential and that everyone wanted to work with us, we decided to open another label, Upstream Music SA, to accommodate everyone.”

Molefe advised music enthusiasts who were still waiting for their big break, and to sign onto a major label, to start with what they have.

He said that just like he has done, one could get a job, save money and create their platform.

“I took everything into my own hands because it was difficult to get resources to do what I wanted to do.”
