Leigh Fernihough finally reaches her milestone

HALFWAY HOUSE – Though it took her two years to get her big award, Leigh Fernihough said that she was proud to have gotten this far.

Halfway House Scout Leigh Fernihough recently received her long-awaited Springbok Scout Award on February 4 after completing all her outstanding tasks last year.

As published in the Midrand Reporter, Young Scouts have their fun outdoors[Week ending June 25, 2021], Fernihough hosted a camp and was left with one task thereafter.

However, due to heavy rains on the day the 1st Halfway House Scouts’ annual general meeting had to be held, where she would be awarded, the meeting was postponed.

Since joining the Scouts when she was just 12 years old, Leigh attested that for Springbok there are lots of requirements that one has to complete.

She said that she started her tasks at the beginning of 2020, but was distracted by the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant they had to resort to doing Scouts online.

“It halted the whole process for me. I started again last year in January. I completed all the requirements because you have to get it done before you are 18 years old and I had about seven months to do everything.”

Even though she had to deal with delays, Leigh expressed how full of joy she was that she finally got to achieve the big award.

“I am so proud about the achievement, it took me so long to get it, it was like two years in the making. So many people have supported me enough for this, so I was just completely over the moon. It took a lot of hard work and effort.”

Leigh said that her next step was to join the Rovers but since she was focusing on her studies to become a paramedic, she was going to do it casually, helping out wherever she can.

And for those who want to be like her and become a Springbok Scout one day, Leigh said they could just research the nearest troop to them.

“Find a troop that works for you because you will spend a lot of time together with them, so you want to meet your kind of people, and friends, because you build a family as I have done over the past seven years.”
