Midrand Police Station celebrates 40 convictions

HALFWAYHOUSE – Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, Constable Eliot Mabulane said that the cases ranged from drunk and driving, theft, fraud, hit and run, malicious damage to property, business breaking and more.

Midrand Police Station has celebrated 40 convictions since January 1 this year.

According to Constable Eliot Mabulane, spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, the 40 suspects were convicted for various crimes in the Midrand Magistrates’ Court.

“These convictions range from theft, drunk and driving, fraud, hit and run, malicious damage to property, business breaking, and refusal to furnish information to law enforcement officers,” said Mabulane.

He said the convictions included fines from R500 to R10 000 or five days to three years in prison.

“In one of the cases involving a hit and run incident, [a suspect] was convicted to 30 days in prison and given an option to pay a fine of R3 000. In a case involving reckless and negligent driving, [ a man] was fined R2 000 or 20 days in prison.

“[A man] was sentenced to one month in prison and also given an option to settle a fine of R2 000 for failing and refusing to furnish information to a police officer.”

Mabulane said in another case involving a person driving without a driver’s licence and failing to display a licence disk, the person was sentenced to 20 days in prison or a fine of R2 000.

Brigadier David Tsotsotso, the Midrand Police Station Commander commended the police members for conducting investigations that led to the convictions.

He said these convictions would serve as a deterrence to those who break the law.

“The law will always apply to all and everyone should take note that the Midrand SAPSs are working hard to get rid of crime within the Midrand area,” he added.

“As we are awaiting for convictions on other cases that are still in court, more arrests are to follow and we hope that harsher sentences will be given to those suspects who get involved in the abuse of women and children.”
