Starting a conversation this Teen Suicide Prevention Week

SANDTON – According to Sadag, you don’t need special training to have an open, authentic genuine conversation about mental health.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) launched its online campaign called #RealConvo for Teen Suicide Prevention Week, February 14–21.

The group aims to share important conversation starters, helpful tips on what to say and what not to say, sharing expert videos and resources on how to talk about teen suicide.

According to Sadag, you don’t need special training to have an open, authentic genuine conversation about mental health.

“Often, just talking about it can be the first important step in staying connected,” said the group on social media.

Sadag shares the following tips on starting a conversation on mental health:

1. Let people know that you are willing to talk about mental health
– Letting others know you’re a safe person to talk to if they never need to reach out.

2. How to help someone you think is struggling
– Trust your gut, if you feel like something is wrong, ask
– Speak to them privately
– Start by telling them you care
– Be direct about what you have noticed

3. The timing does not have to be perfect
– Don’t be offended if they don’t talk to you
– If they don’t seem to want to open up to you, ask who they would be more comfortable talking to
– Follow up by reaching out to the person they feel more comfortable with, tell them what you are worried about and ask if they will connect with them

4. Scared that you won’t be able to help?
– The teen might be more comfortable talking with someone else, you can offer help to connect them.
– We don’t need to have all the answers
– If you’re scared, imagine how they are feeling
– By simply starting a conversation you are supporting them and showing them that they aren’t alone.
– Reach out to others or call Sadag to discuss possible ways you can support them. Call 0800 567 567 or visit www.sadag.org
