School excited for the return of sports

NOORDWYK – Learners competed in shot-put, high jump, running, and long jump as they gave it their all to have their house take the lead.

Midrand Primary School’s learners brought their A-game at this year’s inter-house athletics on January 28.

Learners represented their houses – Pumas, Tigers, Lions, and Leopards – as they each competed in shot-put, 100m races, long jump, and high jump.

Educator and organiser, Fisokuhle Sikhosana said it had been quite funny as, after two years with no green light for schools to participate in sports, they had to remind themselves, by going through archives, that they can still do well at sport.

“We truly thank our dedicated teachers and extra hands from the assistants, the adrenalin was overwhelming but we are excited that all went well especially following the Covid-19 protocols,” said Sikhosana.

Morapeleng Stokes-Thubakgale, who is also the organiser and educator at the school, explained that it was important for them to get back and do sport. She said extra-curricular activity formed an integral part of the overall personality grooming of any learner, adding that it has been extremely difficult to resume athletics after being on pause for two years straight –that on its own made the event more important.

Stokes-Thubakgale said the learners who qualified in their inter-house will represent the school at the inter-schools athletics to be held soon. “Learners will still need [to prepare more] before competing outside the school. There’s a lot to be done to prepare the learners due to the two years break. However, I’m sure will manage through our dedicated and trained staff,” said Stokes-Thubakgale.
