Summerhill School appoints head of sport

MIDRAND — He is the former head of sport at Christ Church Preparatory School.

Midrand-based Summerhill School is taking their sport to new heights both literally and figuratively.

Summerhill is proud to introduce, Reece Prinsloo as the new head of sports for the school. Vashni Chetty, principal of Summerhill College, described Prinsloo as a ‘gentle giant’ who would bring a wealth of experience to both Summerhill campuses.

Prinsloo is the former head of sports at Christ Church Preparatory School in Midrand. He will oversee the sports programme across the whole school, working to grow a lifelong interest in sports participation in all learners.
Prinsloo is the current owner of the Midrand Basketball Academy. He represented South Africa in basketball from 2015 to 2018 internationally and has captained basketball team Egoli Magic from 2018 to 2021. The team was crowned Basketball National League champions for three consecutive years.

He said he aimed to identify and improve the unique strengths of the sport programme at each campus and to provide consistency in coaching styles, and also believed that there were many inherent benefits associated with participating in sport.

“Through playing sports, we learn to respect the opposition, appreciate the role of officials, work as part of a team, to win and lose with grace and humility and learn how to be great sportsmen and sportswomen,” Prinsloo said.

Prinsloo reiterated that while everyone loved to win, there were also losses and other challenges in sport. “These experiences allow learners to learn what they are capable of, truly understand the meaning of resilience, and to develop lifelong friendships.”
Chetty concluded, “We are looking forward to a stellar year having returned to sport after two years and with Prinsloo at the helm, we are sure to have a successful year.”
