Shine your light this Christmas

HALFWAY HOUSE – Susan Van Eeden, principal for Dreamhill International School said that one should never dim their light as it might positively impact the next and change their life.

With Christmas coming soon, Dreamhill International School’s principal, Susan van Eeden reflected on some of her school’s highlights for this year.

Van Eeden said that some of the toughest moments this year came about because of the lockdowns and having to do online education with the kids.

She added that even though all learners would have a laptop or a tablet available they did not always take part in the classes. They did not always send in their assignments, or do the work they were supposed to do due to feeling disconnected from the teachers.

And that led to a slight drop in their marks.

“I think the biggest impact has been on our children and even the teachers themselves, it is difficult to teach over the screens, and hard to make a connection when 90% of teaching is connecting with the child in front of you, and building a relationship.

“That is how they learn from you, so that was the biggest hurdle. Because once we were able to teach full-time in class and have the kids with us again, the marks went up. They could build relationships, and a lot of stress was reduced.”

Van Eeden said that throughout all the hurdles, there were positive highlights, some of which were Dreamhill’s Got Talent, which became a huge success, and their awards ceremony.

On behalf of Dreamhill International School, Van Eeden extended some well wishes to community members, parents, learners, and staff, saying that they should not be afraid to shine because the world needs their light.

“So it does not matter what the circumstances are around you, shine and be yourself because someone might need your positivity to get through the next day.

“Be yourself, shine and do what you love to do, and do not fear what others may think or say because someone might need your positivity to be able to cope and carry on with the new year.”
