Eight motorists arrested for contravening the Road Traffic Act

MIDRAND – The Midrand Police plead with motorists to be more considerate on the road so everyone can get to their destination alive and safe.

The Midrand police recently welcomed the arrests of eight motorists for contravention of the National Road Traffic Act for reckless and negligent driving from November 19 to 22.

According to the Midrand Police Station spokesperson, Constable Eliot Mabulane, most of the suspects arrested were taxi drivers.

Mabulane added that the majority of the taxi drivers arrested either do not have licences or did not have their licences on them, and their vehicles were not roadworthy either.

“These suspect were arrested in the morning during rush hour, some were driving in the wrong lanes facing oncoming traffic, ignoring the road signs, and driving inconsiderately.

“Before the arrests could be made, the suspect were asked for reasons for breaking the law, some justified their actions saying that they were rushing to get their commuters to work or at their interviews in time.”

Mabulane said that those justifications could not be regarded as reasonable reasons for those actions.

He added that the arrests were made to send a strong message to those that break road rules because such actions could lead to severe accidents where lives could be lost.

“Not only are such actions wrong but they could lead to incidents of road rage which then leads to assaults and malicious damages through the anger of other drivers.

“As we are approaching the festive season, we plead with motorists to avoid such wrongdoing on the road so that everyone can arrive alive and safe at their destination.”

He further added that the Midrand Social Crime Prevention unit will be embarking on a campaign to address GBV (gender-based violence) on 16 December at Waterfall.

“We will be addressing cases of general assault, kidnapping, and other crimes that contribute to crime against humanity.

“Other crimes to be addressed will be those relating to fraud and theft or robbery of cash as we approach the festive season.”
Mabulane concluded that the reason for such intervention was because they were anticipating such crimes to be on the rise as many people will be withdrawing large amounts of money.
