As trains go, the Gautrain, operated by Bombela Concession Company, is one of the most efficient in South Africa, transporting commuters to their destinations at lightning speed.
Following a power glitch due to damaged overhead power cables that saw 47 commuters stuck on the Gautrain for a couple of hours on November 9, Midrand Reporter requested a tour of two Gautrain stations.
The tour began at Midrand Gautrain Station and we travelled to the Sandton station and returned to Midrand.
Referring to the Gautrain’s safety measures in place, Bombela issued a statement saying, ‘Safety is our topmost priority. We have a detailed evacuation procedure that is strictly adhered to, to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers and staff.
‘We have a remarkable record in terms of offering a reliable service, but service disruptions, however uncommon, does occur from time to time… the evacuation procedure is based on this premise, and we take great care to ensure that we evacuate passengers as safely and as efficiently as possible.’
The Gautrain network, which reportedly cost about R30 billion to construct, draws the attention of many curious first time commuters and daily users.
