Initiative heeds small business growth

MIDRAND – The organisation willhost a memorandum of understanding signing event on November 17 to begin working with small businesses to encourage economic growth.

The South African Business Initiative for Small, Micro, and Medium Enterprises will be signing a memorandum of understanding with small business owners in a bid to promote collaboration for business growth on November 23.

Paul Mookang, the chairperson of the non-profit company, explained that the aim was to convert members’ abilities to execute daily business operations.

He said research indicates that spaza and tuck shops can assist economic growth and relieve unemployment in South African townships and rural communities. The initiave wants to encourage business owners to view their spaza shops or businesses in broad terms. “Among the skills and daily tasks needed for managing their spaza shops and businesses will be, for example, the financial aspects like budgeting, interpreting financial statements, and business,” Mookang added.

“Amongst others, the following will be necessary: accounting, business finance, marketing by developing a marketing strategy, selling, advertising, human resources management, and labour relations; inter-personal skills for customer services, operation management like finding resources and possible suppliers; purchasing such as ordering goods or services, receiving and inspecting the goods and stock control.”

Mookang said that the company would like to encourage spaza and business owners to use the mentioned business aspects on daily basis, and will ensure that constant follow-up takes place centrally via technology.

“The South African Business Initiative for Small, Micro, and Medium Enterprises believes that South African township and rural communities are one of the most sophisticated and promising emerging markets due to its high unemployment rate. With that in mind, we do have an MOU [memorandum of understanding] signing ceremony at the Setlabo Makwena African Food Spaza Container which is situated at 34 Rietspruit Street, Olivenhoutbosch.”
