Homeowners are warned

MIDRAND – Midrand police urge community members to vet people before they hire them to work in their homes.

The Midrand Police Station has warned residents and homeowners not to let people looking for jobs in their homes without vetting them first.

According to the station spokesperson, Constable Eliot Mabulane, “For the past few weeks, we have found that several cases of theft from houses allege that jewellery, furniture, and electronic equipment are being taken by these domestic workers who get employed from the street and shopping complexes,” he added.

He explained that most of the alleged suspects are women on the side of the roads and next to shopping complexes, seeking employment or part-time jobs. He added that as soon as the suspects are brought into one’s house, they allegedly scout for anything valuable to steal and make extra cash.

Mabulane said these cases show the negligence of homeowners. “We are again urging community members, property owners, and or any person who will need a domestic worker to avoid taking any stranger to their house. Make sure that you have information on the person that you are about to employ, even if you are employing them for a short while, make sure they have a work permit, passport, or identity documents.”

Mabulane added that on November 7, a case was reported where a complainant alleged that a worker stole R4 000 and another item from the victim’s home. “After being confronted, she later sent back the property using an electronic hailing taxi. Therefore, we appeal with the residents to please be extra careful when employing strangers,” concluded Mabulane.
