Illegal gun seized

MIDRAND – Constable Eliot Mabulane said that the suspect was found in contravention of the National Road Traffic Act and harrassing an old man.

A man was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and driving recklessly on October 21 in Midrand.

Spokesperson for Midrand Police Station Constable Eliot Mabulane said the suspect was arrested after he contravened the National Road Traffic Act by driving recklessly and threatening a senior citizen male driver with a firearm.

Mabulane said the suspect blocked the senior citizen’s car after the man questioned his driving and approached his vehicle to intimidate him with his firearm.

He added that later on, a police officer who was not in uniform arrived at the scene, introduced himself and presented his police appointment card before trying to calm the situation down. “The suspect was asked if his firearm was licensed, to which he said it was not, and then he was asked to surrender the firearm to which he refused and wrestled with the police officer,” said Mabulane

“Later on the firearm was confiscated, backup was called and the suspect was arrested.”

He added that the suspect was detained at the station and was waiting to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

Midrand Police Station Commander, Brigadier David Tsotsotso applauded the police members for upholding the Constitution and always protecting the rights of those who were violated by lawbreakers.
