Learners had their creative juices flowing for a recent writing competition.
Five learners from Christ Church Preparatory School and College entered the South African Council for English Education Creative Writing competition in October.
The school’s marketing representative Dawn Schmitz said, “Learners submitted work to the competition and two of the five entries achieved bronze awards, namely Elmarie Sunguti, in Grade 10, for her monologue and Anya Oommen, in Grade 8, for her short story.”
Schmitz said feedback from Jane Fox, the adjudicator was positive for entries, especially Anya Oommen’s story, Bright Fires and Amber Marigolds (a story is about a mother who is a permanent resident in a psychiatric facility) and Elmarie Vusieka’s monologue which used the flower in the concrete as a metaphor for the life of a girl, and one feels her pain at every turn of the story.
“On the public speaking front, Kristen Peters placed fifth out of 800 speakers at the Interschool Public Speaking League on October 9,” Schmitz concluded.
