JRA is committed to clean up streets during rainy season

MIDRAND – Mosa Makhalima, communications for Johannesburg Roads Agency said the department would continue cleaning up the streets, especially now in the rainy season.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency said its team would continue removing weeds on pavements and islands regularly during the rainy season.

This came after Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe voiced her concern over the tall weeds growing on the pavement along Harry Galaun Drive, as previously published in the Midrand Reporter article Weed control? [Week ending October 15].

Officials from the roads agency responded to the call and visited Harry Galaun Drive to clean the pavements and the island on October 12. When the JRA team and the Midrand Reporter arrived at the site, the island was already cleaned.

Deppe said the work was carried out by a local foundation. “The foundation went there on October 7 as they do on a regular basis to clean up,” she added.

JRA spokesperson, Mosa Makhalima, thanked the members of the community on behalf of the JRA for engaging in active citizenry by helping to clean the island at Harry Galaun.

She told the Midrand Reporter that as the JRA teams are removing weeds on Harry Galaun Drive, they would continue removing weeds in other areas as well.

Makhalima explained that JRA removes the weeds from the islands using a chemical spray, especially if the weeds are stubborn.

“However, our team can also take them out manually without using a chemical spray,” she added.

“When they use a chemical spray, they come back the following day to remove the weeds.

“We are in a rainy season and weeds grow faster [now] than during other seasons.”

Makhalima concluded that the JRA encourages residents to report all road and storm water-related issues, including potholes.
